Translation and Repair: What you have or need?
by
Robert A. Konczal, Chief Technical Officer
“Data Translation and repair costs the
industry 20 billion dollars a year”, says an Industry study released in
the last 12 months. Are
you surprised? Don’t be--
the need to translate data between different systems can be a very costly
and frustrating roadblock to successfully producing a product. The topic alone can be mind-boggling so I sought out to
explain the process, terminology and options you have as a SolidWorks user
while trying to maintain a readers’ digest format.

---------------------------- Wave
Washer 101
by Josh Altergott, Technical
Analyst The
purpose of this exercise is to demonstrate one way to easily model a wave
or spring type of washer. It is drawn using two offset planes and a
3dSketch of a spline to create the model. The benefit of modeling a wave
washer in this way is that it is a relatively small file size, and it
would be very easy to generate a design table to create variations of
different sizes.

Tips - Design Copy Tool in SolidWorks
By Rod Levin, President, InFlow Technology Most

Demonstration FormatWorks
by Capvidia solves frustrating data incompatibility problems occurring
during the import of 3D models into SolidWorks. It provides functions
complementary to SolidWorks for File Import (IGES, VDA-FS), Geometry Check
(VDA4955, AIAG D-15, JAMA), Model Improvements (automatic and manual) and
File Export (IGES with CAD system flavors). Faulty SolidWorks models can
be easily repaired with minimal user interaction.

From the
President
Who owns your
CAD data?
by Richard Werneth, President
Posed this
question, most people would respond: “I do.” An organization’s CAD
data is a valuable asset and it makes up the “DNA” of their product
line.

News
from the CTO Beyond
3D; Part2
“Managing the 3D Corporate Assets”
By Robert A. Konczal, Chief Technical Officer As
discussed last month in Beyond 3D part 1, in order to realize the maximum
ROI from your SolidWorks investment, the entire corporation needs to
access this data—easily yet securely! Sounds like a pipedream—huh?
Well, consider this as your next step in reaching “3d Nirvana”
or more appropriately stated as a future quote of your CEO, “Our
Engineering Department is our Strategic Weapon at ABC, Inc.”!
Being the highlight of a customer facility tour is not what I am
referencing. The annual
earnings press conference or board of director meeting is more like it.
The topic for this article is focused on what all organizations
need to consider sooner than later—managing the corporate
assets—Product Data Management tools (PDM).
