Technical Support Bulletin: Connexus Technical Note
By Justin Webster

Take control of the PDF files you publish from SolidWorks

Do you create PDF files from SolidWorks to distribute viewable files to your company? Do you find that users in your company are asking you which PDF file is the latest? Take control of your PDF files using the Connexus Document Publishing and Distribution.

“We made the wrong version again!”
Many users of SolidWorks need to share drawings with the enterprise, whether it be purchasing or manufacturing. With Adobe PDF becoming the viewing standard at many companies, we are finding more and more SolidWorks users generating PDF files when they are ready for a drawing to be released for production. This PDF file, although lightweight and free to view, becomes an uncontrolled file in the organization. It is emailed from user to user and, when a change occurs in SolidWorks, the PDF file must be recreated and sent again. The constant circulation of these “uncontrolled” documents can become a problem in an organization. Essentially no one knows if the version they are using is the latest and we all know what can happen as a result.

“Where did you put that drawing?”
So, in order to get a handle on the PDF files, many companies have implemented a network share so that users can go to a common location for PDF files. This creates the “where is that file again?” syndrome where non-technical people constantly have issues with accessing or locating the PDF files they need. Then you are leaving it up to them to get the correct version of the PDF file.

Connexus Document Publishing and Distribution
Connexus Document Publishing and Distribution software can address these issues with a direct from SolidWorks publishing tool that can published required PDF files to a vault that is accessed through a secure web site. SolidWorks users simply click a button to submit the drawing to the Connexus Queue and Connexus writes the PDF file and attribute data such as Revision, Part Number, and Description into a database.

When a change is made in SolidWorks, just publish another drawing to create a Connexus Vault with revision history.

To access the vault, users now have a friendly web interface for finding the drawings they need and all they need to remember is a web favorite. With advanced searching tools they can search by part number or other attributes. With secure logins, Connexus can also control who can see all revisions or latest revisions only.

For those companies looking to get control of their engineering drawings, Connexus can be a solution. For more information, contact your InFlow / CATI account manager or visit www.inflow-tech.com.
