SolidWorks has made some RealView improvements to the SolidWorks 2008 user interface. RealView now uses appearance shaders that were formerly only available as PhotoWorks Materials, though PhotoWorks is not required in order to use RealView. With this improvement you will see more photorealistic models as you build them. With RealView active, you will also notice face highlighting, reflective floors, realistic materials, active lighting, and accurate shadows.

RealView will also let you apply scenes to the background of your models, like this 3D kitchen scene that completely surrounds the model.
The default type of material for RealView appearance is plastic. If you are building a model and have not yet applied a material it will show as plastic.
When working on models made in a previous version of SolidWorks that had specific colors and textures you wish to show, you will have to disable RealView. You may then modify those colors and textures in the usual way, but they will not be available if RealView is enabled.
If your existing models have PhotoWorks materials applied to them they will show in RealView but not the colors and textures.

In order to see this new version of RealView make sure you have a current generation SolidWorks 2008 certified graphics card and driver.
SolidWorks has updated their rating system for different levels of RealView functionality according to the graphics card technology level.
The level you want to be at is the Gold level which will show all the RealView features.
-Supports all RealView features
The Silver level will run a lower quality shader program, using the old shadow styles and you will not see the accurate shadows and fancy reflections.
-Supports RealView features with limitations
The Bronze level will use only OpenGL textures and only show RealView the way it looked in SolidWorks 2007. None of the new features will be functional, but you can still model as always.
-Supports pre-2008 RealView features
Make sure your current Video card is up to the task and has the certified driver for the Gold level of RealView technology.
