Activation is a process which validates a user’s serial number and allows the software to run on the user’s PC. Normally, the user will enter a serial number during the install of the product, and then, on first-run, he will be prompted to activate. If the user chooses to activate automatically over the internet (the preferred choice), the PC will contact the activation server at SolidWorks, which will lookup and verify the user’s serial number. If the serial number is OK, and entitled to be activated, the activation server will return a code to the user’s PC which will allow the product to run on that particular PC. The activation server will also create a record in its database keeping track of the activation, or use, of this license on this particular machine. The activation server uses rules to decide how many active machines a single seat of software can have at any one time. Right now, that number is 2, one for work and one for the laptop or home PC. This will start with service pack 3.0.
A note about serial numbers
Activation-enabled seats will have a 24 character serial number. The first 16 digits take the same form as a traditional SN. The next 8 characters to the right are alpha-numeric. For new seats, activation serial numbers start with ‘90’. For existing seats, 8 characters have been added to the user’s existing 16 digit SN. The existing user (those who already own a 2006 or earlier seat) does not necessarily need to know what his new 24 digit SN is, they will run the activation process with there original serial number.
