DVD Vs CD
We all knew that eventually the time would come where DVDs would take over for CDs as the standard media for distribution of CAD/CAE/PDM software. For SolidWorks this time has come. As of 2007 SP2 SolidWorks will no longer include CDs with the shipment of software for either new purchases or version upgrades.
For those of us who have already received SP0 of SolidWorks on CD this does not change much for us until the release of SolidWorks 2008. We will all be downloading the service packs anyway. New users that purchase SolidWorks after the SP2 release will feel the impact. They will require a DVD player or they will need to purchase a set of CDs separately.
At the point that SW 2008 releases everyone will have the option to use the DVD that is shipped or purchase CDs. Though the pricing has yet to be finalized the early indications are that a full set of CDs and a DVD player will be comparably priced.
It is also important to remember that a company with a network will truly be required to have just one DVD player that can be used to copy the DVD to a network location where all clients will have access. Then the clients can install across the network. Beyond that, there is also the ability to create Administrative Images that can assist in deploying software from a single network location.
