A while back I had the pleasure of training gentleman in SolidWorks, and this is a product of our conversations. In former live he was a toy maker. One day during exercise time, I was handed a key chain, a puzzle key chain at that. Always loving a challenge I modeled the toy in about ten minute, to the dismay of the user. It just goes to show, how powerful a tool like SolidWorks is. Just for your information, it took a week to detail it with pencil and paper.
Back story out of the way, I decided to animate this model with SolidWorks Animator. After rendering the movie file I noticed that the something was missing. The animator was to perfect, and then it hit me. “I’m missing motion blur.” Motion blur is the apparent streaking of rapidly moving objects in a still image or a sequence of images such as a movie or animation. At this point SolidWorks does not have that functionality, so I walk to you through how to do it on your own.

At this point we will assume that you have completed an animator inside of Animator. Now we are going to save the animation.

In this dialog you need to change the “save as type” to “tga”. This will save out a sequence of still images. You also need to change the “Frames per second”, this depends on how much motion blur you want. For now, I’m going to us 150 frames per second. “Why 150 frames a second?” Because you are going to combine every five frames with the next tool I’m about to show you. |
|
The first of these tools is called “Anthill”, which does two things, motion blur and anti-aliasing. This tool takes in bmp files and blends them together with a blurred affect. Here is a hyperlink to download. Anthill |

The second tool is called “Really Cheap Targa Motion Blur” by Jeff Lee. This program takes in tga files and does the motion blur . Here is a hyperlink to download Mr Lee’s tool. Really Cheap Targa Motion Blur

Here is the fifth frame of my animation with motion blur on the left and without on the right.

| Once this is completed you can use free tools like pjBmp2Avi which will make an AVI movie file from your from tga or bmp files. |
