Technical Support Bulletin: Methods for Extruding Text or a Logo on a Part
By Paul Niedermann

Text or a Logo can be Extruded or Cut-Extruded onto many types of surfaces, flat, cylindrical spherical, or compound with various methods. Logo’s should be converted to sketch entities or brought into a sketch from an Adobe Illustrator file.

On a flat surface, select the face and insert a sketch, draw a line or arc to control the placement of the text and set it for construction. With the line selected, use Tools, sketch entities and select text. In the property manager, Type in the text you want to use in the text box, select the orientation, font, size and justification to the line. Next Select the extrude feature and set the dimension for the distance you want to extrude the text, then select the green check mark to complete the feature.

To modify text for an extruded cut, some text font types can require modification to extrude cut into surfaces properly. To modify the text, right mouse button select on the text and pick “Dissolve sketch text”

Next, add and/or trim sketch entities from the text to allow them to be cut extruded through, In the example below the text is trimmed through the “R and D” to allow the inside of the R and D to remain when the material is cut away. Then select the cut-extrude feature and select the sketch entities or contours to be cut away set the direction, depth dimension or “through all” and select the green check mark to complete the feature.

On a cylindrical surface, insert a sketch on a plane and draw a line or arc to control the placement of the text and set it for construction. With the line selected, use Tools, sketch entities and select text. In the property manager, Type in the text you want to use in the text box, select the orientation, font, size and justification to the line. Select the Wrap tool from Insert, features, wrap. Select the cylindrical surface and set the radio button to Emboss, or Deboss, depending on whether you want the text extruded or cut on the surface, respectively. Set the depth dimension and check the green check mark to complete the feature.

On a spherical or compound surface, open a sketch a reasonable distance above the surface you want to extrude text on to and draw a line or arc to control the placement of the text and set it for construction. With the line selected, use Tools, sketch entities and select text. In the property manager, Type in the text you want to use in the text box, select the orientation, font, size and justification to the line.
Next select the extrude feature and in the “From” box Select “Surface/face/plane”, Then pick the surface you want to extrude from and in the “Direction” box select blind and then put in a dimension from the surface you want to use. Make sure the direction arrow is point in the correct direction and then select the green check mark to complete the feature.
