Technical Support Bulletin:
SolidWorks 2006, New Advanced Mate
By Paul Niedermann

Width Mate (New)
Use the Width mate, instead of mating planes of parts together or when mating planes do not align properly to center the features.
Use the Width mate, in cases where you might want to mate the axis of a cylindrical part to center between faces.
This mate also allows part faces to float in the center of other part faces, where gaps are desired rather than parts being sized so their faces are coincident.
These Width mates a referenced as Tab in Groove.

A width mate centers a Tab within the width of a Groove.

Groove width references can include:
Two parallel planar faces
Two non-parallel planar faces (with or without draft)

Tab references can include:
Two parallel planar faces
Two non-parallel planar faces (with or without draft)
Or One cylindrical face or axis

The components align so that the tab is centered between the faces of the groove.
The tab can translate along the center plane of the groove and rotate about an axis normal to the center plane.
The width mate prevents the tab from translating or rotating side to side.

To use this feature;

Click Mate (On Assembly toolbar) or Insert, Mate,

Under Advanced Mates, click Width.
Under Mate Selections:

For Width selections, select two planar faces

For Tab selections, select two planar faces, or one cylindrical face or axis.

As a short cut, you may select the faces of your two parts, select mate button, select advanced mates, and the width button and SolidWorks will fill in the appropriate fields.

Select the green check mark to complete the feature.
