Windows Installer Clean Up Utility (March, 2005)
by Paul Niedermann, Technical Analyst, CATI

If you experience problems with applications installed using Windows Installer technology, Microsoft has created a utility to help alleviate issues.

The Windows Installer Clean-up utility allows you to view applications that have been installed using the Windows Installer technology, and gives you the ability to safely remove the registry entries created by these applications in the event of a problem. It is used to clean up errors that may occur on a computer, while installing or uninstalling a program, that use the Windows Installer technology.

Windows Installer may become damaged if:

· Your computer's registry becomes corrupt
· You or someone else inadvertently changes a registry setting used by the Windows Installer, resulting in a problem - The installation of a program that uses Windows Installer (for example, Microsoft Office 2000) is interrupted.
· There are multiple instances of Setup running simultaneously, or an instance of Setup is "blocked"
· Some programs or services may interfere with the proper install or uninstall of software, such as viruses, spy-ware, ad-ware, anti-virus and (firewall software included in windows XP sp2). Make sure your system is clean of virus, spy-ware and ad-ware; temporarily disable the services listed above, before reinstalling any software programs.

Windows Installer Clean Up Utility will remove all Windows Installer information associated with the selected programs, including the entries for the programs in the Add/Remove Programs control panel. If you remove the settings for a program that is currently installed on your computer, it will no longer be able to add or remove components or be able to repair itself; Note that only the Installer information for that particular program is removed, not the program files. Once the cleanup utility has run, if you want all the files for the program to be removed from your computer, you will have to remove them manually, generally from the C:\ program files “name of application” folder.

To prevent problems, it is recommended that you reinstall your programs before you attempt to use them.

Download and install the program. Look in you applications or programs folder from the Windows Start menu select Windows Install Clean Up. Select the programs to remove from the list and select Remove.
