SolidWorks comes supplied with single Drawing, Part and Assembly templates and a set of English and Metric sheet formats for drawings. You will likely want to set up your own.
Document templates allow you to set many options for the documents you create, including document standards like ANSI, ISO and others, Font size and style, Line font and style, dimensions display, tables format, Units English and metric and template custom properties Etc.
You can access these options by opening a document and selecting Tools, Options, and then select the document properties tab in the in the window.
When you have all you options set the way you need them select, File “save as”, give it a file name using your naming convention and in the window select the pull down “save as type” and select drawing templates, this will add the extension “.drwdot” to the file name, Then select the location to save it and hit the “Save” button.
Make sure you have a folder set up for SolidWorks to select from, Select “Tools”, “Options” from the systems options list select “file locations” and from the pull down menu select “document templates” look at the list if you do not see your location select the “Add” button and browse to the location or create a folder, then select the “OK” button.
You will also want to set up Sheet Formats for your drawing templates. These contain all the visual information about your Sheet size, Borders, Title blocks, default sheet scale view projection (first or third angle) and alphanumeric order in datum labels and format custom properties.
You can create or change this information by right clicking on the drawing document in the tree or in the view and selecting “Edit sheet format”, making the desired changes and then close it by right clicking again in the view or the tree and selecting “edit sheet”. The sheet format has to be saved separately from the template. Save the sheet format by selecting file “ Save sheet format”. These files are usually saved in the SolidWorks data folder under program files SolidWorks.
You may also create a new folder to contain these new versions, by Select “Tools”, “Options” from the systems options list select “file locations” and from the pull down menu select “sheet formats” look at the list if you do not see your location select the “Add” button and browse to the location or create a folder, then select the “OK” button.
