New Auto Trace Tools have been included in SolidWorks 2008. The Auto Trace Tools enable you to convert image data in a raster format into vector data. These tools have been embedded into the Insert Sketch Picture Tool.
Some good uses for these tools are converting in company logos for parts and bringing in scanned geometric designs.
To use these tools, start by inserting a sketch picture and make the adjustments you need, in the settings on the first page of the sketch picture property manager. Next proceed to the second page by selecting the blue arrow button at the top right of the property manager.

On the second page you will see trace settings, preview settings and adjustments. Pick one of the tracing tools for rectangular, freehand and polygonal areas or select areas by colors with the eyedropper tool. Then select begin trace and use the adjustment sliders to refine the trace.

When you are satisfied with the results of the trace select the apply button. Then pick the green check in the property manager to complete.

Afterwards you may manually adjust or clean up the splines and then use them to extrude or cut into parts.

Some important points about file compatibility with Auto Trace Tools;
- Source Images should be Source image should be hi-resolution, with a minimum of 300dpi.
- Line art should be pen on paper, with precise contours and high contrast.
- Colors should be as uniform as possible within the area you select.
- You can use still image formats such as .bmp, .gif, or .jpg, but not animated formats such as animated .gif or .avi files.
- You can apply Auto Trace to part or assembly files but not to drawing files.
