CATI's Industry Solutions - Consumer Products

SolidWorks® software is used worldwide for designing and manufacturing a variety of consumer products for home, business, and recreational use.

SolidWorks provides the consumer products designer with powerful data translation, part modeling, collaboration, tooling development, and photorealistic rendering tools.

SolidWorks capabilities that are especially valuable to consumer product designers include:

  • Data translation to facilitate data reuse from other CAD systems
  • Part modeling for surfacing, sheet metal, ready-made "smart" fasteners, sweep/loft, and configurations of both parts and assemblies
  • Collaboration through eDrawings and 3D Instant Website products to help you coordinate global product development activities
  • Photorealistic renderings and animations using fully integrated PhotoWorks and SolidWorks Animator software, allowing you to communicate how your designs will look and perform

SolidWorks® provides the solution to create consumer products, shorten lead time, and reduce costly mistakes throughout your design process.

Consumer product design is one of the most challenging environments which professionals must create and collaborate in to create products that are both functional and desirable. In order to do this, the CAD system must have the ability to function as a design and documentation tool that offers robust capabilities, while maintaining ease-of-use. SolidWorks® Office Professional addresses the needs of design, engineering, and manufacturing, allowing them to share a common tool for collaboration throughout the design cycle.

Investigation and Conceptualization

Are you plagued by translation issues and loss of design intent because of differential CAD solutions employed at your company? SolidWorks can bridge the gap between design, engineering, and manufacturing. Designers want a tool which allows them to conceptualize and study designs relative to internal components and then create shapes which faithfully adhere to those constraints. SolidWorks offers solutions for importing 2D graphic content as well as 2D and 3D geometric data so that the designer can make reference to them, resulting in more innovative and accurate concepts. SolidWorks employs powerful hybrid surface/solid modeling functionality which easily achieves the demanding shapes of today's consumer products.

Concept Renderings and Prototyping

While in the conceptual phase, consumer product designers need approval of their concepts by management. SolidWorks Animator and PhotoWorks™ can be employed to represent these concepts photo realistically as images or animations. For external clients and vendors, eDrawings™ can transport their 3D design and animations to others without the need for any special viewer software. With STL export and Print3D, models can become reality using a multitude of rapid prototyping technologies.

Detailed Design

Once a concept is chosen, detailed engineering needs to occur without the loss of design intent. Many products fail because design intent gets lost between concept and implementation. SolidWorks offers the ability to capture design intent at the early stages of the design process without limiting creativity. Because of this, design features can then be modified and reiterated throughout the design process. Once the final concept becomes detailed, SolidWorks offers the engineer a complete set of tools to validate the product for manufacturability and required durability.

Documentation and Release

Many product design companies struggle to bring the preferred design concept together with additional collateral. Throughout the entire product design cycle, PDMWorks® can manage revisions and control the flow of work as the database and collateral files are organized and shared amongst the organization. In the final stages of detailed design process, 2D drawings can be created quickly and accurately by leveraging the 3D model. Many of these assets can be used by Marketing, Sales, and Documentation to aid in the creation of pre-sales and documentation collateral. With the increasing trend toward tooling and manufacture offshore, SolidWorks offers the most exhaustive set of translators in the industry. Delivering 3D data through STEP, IGES, or one of the many other formats available, complete tooled part information can be supplemented with CTF (Critical to Function) 2D drawings.

With SolidWorks, designers can evaluate draft, wall thickness, mold flow, and minimum curvature to achieve the highest quality for production surfaces.

SolidWorks can improve your design process at every corner, making you more profitable and competitive. Contact us for more information.

FEA Solutions for Consumer Product Design

The Consumer Products industry uses the COSMOS™ family to solve a wide variety of problems, such as:

  • Create safer snowboard bindings while reducing prototyping costs.
  • Getting a new product onto the market much faster by reducing the time spent redesigning, improving, and prototyping.
  • Testing designs for stress, displacement, frequency, buckling, heat transfer, dynamic response and nonlinear analysis under real-life operating conditions.
  • Design a streamlined speed skiing helmet that would help the United States Speed Skiing Team increase their speed while maximizing head protection.
