SolidWorks Versus AutoDesk® Inventor®

The time has come for mechanical design to move from 2D to 3D. It has been debated for years, but the debate is over, so who do you trust? AutoDesk® AutoCAD® has been the de-facto standard for 2D, not by being the best, but by starting early at a good price point and addressing a broad audience.

Who is the 3D standard? The answer can be clearly found in terms of Vision, Capability, Community, Experience and Momentum.

SolidWorks, a clear vision from the start . Just as AutoCAD® gained a following because it brought a new capability to the mass market, SolidWorks was the first affordable Solids Modeling system. SolidWorks set a new standard from the beginning by being the first 3D solids package to run on affordable hardware and priced at an affordable price point.

SolidWorks has had a vision from day 1 set by it's founder John Hirschtick, get rid of the CAD overhead and to bring the power of 3D solids to every engineer.

The SolidWorks community. The affordability of SolidWorks has helped to build a community of users that are not blind fan boys, but engaged partners helping to build the 3D Standard. This community is a partnership between customers, SolidWorks, locally owned Value Added Resellers, like CATI, Education institutions and SolidWorks Users Groups.

The capability of SolidWorks. SolidWorks has lead the market with capabilities that harness powerful features in an interface that is intuitive and easy to use. The most powerful feature is of no use if it is frustrating to use. These breakthrough capabilities include:

  • Feature Tree - Listing the features in a tree is an innovation adopted by every other player in the market.
  • Windows - This may not sound like a big deal now, but SolidWorks was the first to see how affordable hardware would transform the industry.
  • Swift Technology - A bold innovation that makes even more of the power of SolidWorks available in an easy to understand way to every user.
  • API Programming - The ability to customize SolidWorks has always been included for free.
  • Property Manager Interface - Lets you work without covering up your work with dialog boxes.
  • Simulation - Every SolidWorks user has access to Simulation to assist in validating designs. SolidWorks Simulation has robust simulation capability available from the same interface, working on the same files as SolidWorks.

This is just a sampling of areas SolidWorks has lead the market. If you want to see where AutoDesk® Inventor® will be in 3 years, take a look at SolidWorks today.

Momentum of 3D and SolidWorks. The people who were first to use SolidWorks in 1995 had to be true believers. We know because CATI sold a lot of those first seats. Now, SolidWorks is the clear leader and gaining ground on the market.

In March 2009 SolidWorks passed the 1,000,000 seat mark, quite an achievement, but the more important thing is that the people who buy SolidWorks use SolidWorks. It is not just a package included with an upgrade. Our customers stake their lively hood on SolidWorks. A responsibility we take seriously.

How do you Judge momentum? How about jobs?

SolidWorks has consistently outpaced it's competitors in Job demand. Click on the image above to get an up to the minute view.

How about case studies? CATI has helped many organizations make the move from Inventor® to SolidWorks. Review the list to the left.

Experience in leading organizations from 2D to 3D. There were many choices for 2D, and the market made a decision that AutoCAD® was the winner. There are many choices for 3D now. There is a clear 3D winner and that is SolidWorks. As a result we have real experience in "Bridging the Worlds of 2D and 3D Design". We have done it before and can help you through the transition.

The decision to select a 3D Design system is unique to each organization. Don't go with the easy decision and go with the Inventor® upgrade. Make sure you make an informed decision and give SolidWorks a look.
