Shaded Threads Without Cosmetic Threads

EmailFacebookLinkedInTwitterShare

Did you know that it is possible to show Shaded Threads (the neat .jpg image wrapped on your holes) on your model without showing Cosmetic Threads (the dashed circle at the top of the hole)?!? This might be useful for doing a nice screen capture without the dashed circles, or maybe you just don’t like them. You can do this, but you have to “trick” SOLIDWWORKS a little bit.Right click on the Annotations folder (in the tree) and choose Details, if […]

Temporarily “Disabling” On Screen Numeric Input

EmailFacebookLinkedInTwitterShare

Like using the “Enable on screen numeric input on entity creation” when you are sketching in SOLIDWORKS 2009 ?? BUT, have trouble being overdefined a lot because of this ?? Especially when “closing up” a profile ?? No problem… As you are sketching, just hold down the ALT key before you click to end a line and it will NOT add a dimension to that line (or arc, or circle, etc.) Pretty cool !

Linking to “Thickness” (trick) in SolidWorks

EmailFacebookLinkedInTwitterShare

Want the option to tie all “future” extrusions in a part to the thickness of your part ? After you do what ever you need to do to make the first feature of your thin part (extrude & shell, revolve & shell, or just extrude, etc.) LINK the value of the dimension that would be your “thickness” to a variable name called “Thickness”. (just double click the dimension, click on the Pull Down arrow next to dimension value, and choose […]

What I Learned On My Summer Vacation… (Tips & Tricks from SWworld pt.3)

In a 3D Sketch create a spline perpendicular to a face. If you just pick the SPLINE and the FACE, you get a TANGENT option. This will try to physically MOVE the spline over to TOUCH the face and be TANGENT with the face. Sometimes this is NOT what you wanted and sometimes you will end up with a NO SOLUTION FOUND problem. More likely what you want is just for the spline to be TANGENT to the face, but […]

PART 2 of New Virtual Component functionality in SOLIDWORKS 2008

EmailFacebookLinkedInTwitterShare

Last month I wrote a blog entry titled “New “Virtual Component” functionality in SOLIDWORKS 2008” hoping to CLEAR UP some of the confusion that was going on with customers switching to SolidWorks2008. But a week or so ago I realized an important new OPTION that you probably want to have turned on for the new “Virtual Component” functionality to flow better… Under TOOLS–OPTIONS–SYSTEM OPTIONS–EXTERNAL REFERENCES you should probably TURN ON the option “Update component names when documents are replaced”. Otherwise […]

What’s New in 2008 Technical Tip: Setting a default RealView Appearance for all parts/assys

EmailFacebookLinkedInTwitterShare

Several people have asked me if/how you can set a DEFAULT RealView Appearance for any part that you open. There are really TWO ways to do this. The RealView Appearance gets SAVED WITH THE PART/ASSY FILE. So, for any NEW parts that you are going to create in SolidWorks2008, if you set a RealView Appearance in your part or assembly TEMPLATE and save the template, it will use that appearance. But the real reason people are asking about this is […]
