Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) have become a huge market online.\u00a0 Being able to own a unique piece of digital media has driven some investors and collectors to spend hundreds, thousands, even hundreds of thousands on NFTs.\u00a0 One New York Times journalist sold a\u00a0PICTURE<\/strong>\u00a0of his\u00a0FREE TO READ<\/strong>\u00a0article<\/a>\u00a0for over $500,000\u2026 SO If you\u2019re anything like me, you may have seen a few of these online \u201cmasterpieces\u201d, often 3D models, and thought to yourself\u2026 \u201cI could make one of those\u201d.\u00a0 Well, I am here to tell you, that\u2019s true with the help of\u00a0SOLIDWORKS Visualize<\/a>.\u00a0 Let\u2019s jump in and see how we could create an NFT with SOLIDWORKS Visualize.<\/p>\n

The Set Up<\/h2>\n

Now, personally, I don\u2019t have a very keen eye for art.\u00a0 Most of my art projects end up in the dust bin\u2026 so I thought, \u201cWhy not make the dust bin my art?\u201d.\u00a0 You can see below the beautiful bin I have created in SOLIDWORKS, complete with a lid!\u00a0 This is the model I will eventually make into an NFT.<\/p>\n

Before I take this model into Visualize, I am going to add appearances to the part.\u00a0 These appearances will stay shown when we export the assembly into Visualize.\u00a0 If you need a refresher on how to add appearances, check out this\u00a0blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n

NFTs can be made from audio files, videos, pictures and, probably most popularly, 3D model art. BUT, to create an NFT from our SOLIDWORKS model (.sldprt or .sldasm) we first need to convert the model to one of the below file types.<\/p>\n

SOLIDWORKS itself CAN\u2019T export models to any of these file types. Luckily, SOLIDWORKS Visualize CAN export to a .glb or .gltf file.\u00a0 Visualize comes with SOLIDWORKS Professional or Premium, so this tool may already be available to you even if you have not used it before.<\/p>\n

The Export<\/h2>\n

To start with, lets\u00a0export our model to Visualize<\/a>.\u00a0 This is done by turning on the Visualize add in (Tools>Add-Ins>Visualize<\/strong>) and using the\u00a0Export Advanced\u00a0<\/strong>command from the SOLIDWORKS Visualize CommandManager Tab (see below).<\/p>\n

This will open Visualize and import our model.\u00a0 Notice all the appearances that were applied in SOLIDWORKS are still visible in Visualize.\u00a0 You can change appearances in Visualize as well, but this can looks good as is!<\/p>\n

From here all we need to do is go to\u00a0File>Export>Export Project<\/strong>\u00a0and save the file as a .glb or .gltf file type.\u00a0 You can view your new file using Windows 3D Viewer.<\/p>\n

Once we have that .glb file, all that\u2019s left is to create the NFT.\u00a0 There are multiple sites that you can use to do this.<\/p>\n

The Essential Steps<\/h2>\n

In short, the steps to create an NFT with SOLIDWORKS Visualize are:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Create SOLIDWORKS model<\/li>\n
  2. Apply appearances<\/li>\n
  3. Activate Visualize Add-In<\/li>\n
  4. Export model to Visualize<\/li>\n
  5. Export Visualize project>Save as .glb\/.gltf<\/li>\n
  6. Create NFT on website of your choice<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The Short Cut<\/h2>\n

    SOLIDWORKS has an\u00a0Extended Reality exporter tool<\/a>\u00a0in beta mode as of 2021. With the XR exporter you can export SOLIDWORKS models directly to .glb or .gltf files. Download and install the SW XR exporter from the downloads page of the\u00a0customer portal<\/a>. Once installed, the\u00a0Save As<\/strong>\u00a0command in SW will allow you to save as a .glb\/.gltf without the intermediary steps of Visualize.<\/p>\n
