If you have ever attended a play at a theater or on Broadway, you may have noticed that the lighting, scenery and backdrops move and change as though choreographed around the performance. This precise choreography is accomplished by planning out every detail of each scene of the performance. There may be many changes required during the performance with everything fitting onto the same stage. By managing the layers and views in\u00a0DraftSight<\/a>, your designs can flow as though choreographed in the same way that scenes are used in a play. The tool to accomplish this will be the\u00a0<\/a>Layer\u00a0States Manager<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Once the layers for your drawing have been created there will be a set of properties available on the\u00a0Drafting and\u00a0<\/em>Annotations<\/i>\u00a0workspace on the\u00a0Home Tab \u2013 Layers<\/em>\u00a0section. It will show the active layer and look like this:<\/p>\n

To modify the properties of all of the layers together you will need to use the\u00a0Layers Manager<\/em> \"\"\u00a0. It will open a dialog that looks like this:<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The active layer is highlighted, but any of the properties can be changed in this screen and clicking \u201cOK\u201d will confirm the changes.<\/p>\n

The powerful feature mentioned at the beginning of this article is in the upper right corner of this dialog. The\u00a0Layer States<\/em>\u00a0button.<\/p>\n

By clicking on this another dialog will open on top of the\u00a0Layer Manager<\/em>\u00a0like this:<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The idea with this screen is that it will allow you to take a snapshot or the current layer properties to be reused later.<\/p>\n

Here only the layers; Furn, Lights, and Plan are visible.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

To save this snapshot, click on the\u00a0Layer States<\/em>\u00a0button,\u00a0Add<\/em>\u00a0a new state and name it \u201cLights & Furn\u201d, and click\u00a0Save.\u00a0<\/em>Click on\u00a0Close<\/em>\u00a0and change the properties of the layers so that only the Plan and Ceiling Grid are visible, and the Ceiling Grid is locked.<\/p>\n

Create another saved state with all layers visible and unlocked and name it \u201cDefault\u201d.<\/p>\n

Now you\u2019re ready to cycle through these Layer states by opening the\u00a0Layer States Manager<\/em>, selecting a named state and clicking on\u00a0Activate<\/em>.<\/p>\n

By creating these named states you will be able to quickly and easily move from scene to scene to work on details, isolate items or groups, and create a smoother workflow.<\/p>\n
