SOLIDWORKS Admin Image Creation and Deployment<\/h1>\n

Start by logging into the\u00a0SOLIDWORKS Customer Portal<\/a>. If you do not have an account, create one.<\/p>\n

Once logged in go to\u00a0Download -> Download and Updates.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Select the\u00a0Version<\/strong>\u00a0from the drop-down and then select the\u00a0Product.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Accept<\/strong>\u00a0End User License Agreement (EULA).<\/p>\n

Select\u00a0Download\u00a0<\/strong>(Note<\/strong>: Recommend using the default location; this is just the Installation Manager and can be removed after install files are downloaded).<\/p>\n

Once Downloaded the Installation Manager will launch, Select the last option\u00a0Download and Share<\/strong>. This will give you the complete file set to upgrade any Server Products as well as creating the Admin Image.<\/p>\n

Browse to the download location (by default Documents\\SOLIDWORKS Downloads\\SOLIDWORKS 20XX SPX). Go to\u00a0Setup.exe<\/strong>\u00a0and right-click and\u00a0Run as administrator.<\/strong><\/p>\n

When the Installation Manager (IM) launches you will get a warning about a Windows reboot pending. It is always recommended that a reboot is done prior to any installation, however in most cases, it is appropriate to just hit\u00a0OK.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Verify the Download Options are correct; select\u00a0Change<\/strong>\u00a0to modify them.<\/p>\n

Select\u00a0Accept Terms<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Download Now.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Creating the Administrative Image<\/h2>\n

In the Installation Manager choose\u00a0Create an administrative image\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

You can then choose to create a new image with default settings or create a new image from an existing image. In this case, we are going to concentrate on a new image.<\/p>\n

Select\u00a0Create a new image<\/strong>\u00a0using default settings and click\u00a0Next.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00adEnter\u00a0Product Serial Number(s)<\/strong>. You can only enter one serial number per product here; if you have multiple serial numbers per product, this can be changed while editing the Admin Image once it is created. Click\u00a0Next.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Define a location to save the Admin Image, if desired. By default, the image will be saved to\u00a0C:\\SOLIDWORKS Admin\\SOLIDWORKS 20XX SPX<\/strong>; click\u00a0Change<\/strong>\u00a0to browse to a different location.<\/p>\n

Note:<\/strong>\u00a0Your \u2018Create image from location\u2019 may vary from this image.<\/p>\n

Launching the Administrative Image Editor<\/h2>\n

Select\u00a0Customize Image<\/strong>\u00a0to begin editing the Admin Image. Also, if you are new to creating an Admin Image; check the box for\u00a0Show me how to install this image on a Client.<\/strong><\/p>\n

You can also launch the Admin Image editor by browsing to the folder where the Admin Image was saved.<\/p>\n

To customize, right-click\u00a0sldAdminOptionEditor.exe<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Run as administrator.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Administrative Image Editor Setup<\/h2>\n

Global Settings<\/h3>\n

Once launched, you will be on the\u00a0Setup<\/strong>\u00a0tab. Click\u00a0Change<\/strong>\u00a0to make any adjustments.<\/p>\n

Note:<\/strong>\u00a0The initial launch is for Global Settings. Any changes here would apply to all Installations.<\/p>\n

Client Install Options<\/h3>\n

Please review the Options on how you want SOLIDWORKS Products to Install on the Client Machine:<\/p>\n

Choose whether to\u00a0Upgrade an existing major version<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0Create a new major version.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Browse\u00a0<\/strong>if you wish to change the default installation location.<\/p>\n

Choose whether to leave or uninstall older major version of SOLIDWORKS.<\/p>\n

Note:<\/strong>\u00a0If choosing\u00a0Uninstall<\/strong>; select the additional options you want uninstalled (Program Files and Folders, Registry Entries and\/or Data Files and Folders)<\/p>\n

Choose to use current or SOIDWORKS default settings, or use a settings file exported from the SOLIDWORKS Setting Administrator. If choosing the Settings Administrator, click the\u00a0Launch Settings Administrator<\/strong>\u00a0and go through the Setting Administrator Wizard to make your choices.\u00a0Edit Path<\/strong>\u00a0as needed.<\/p>\n

Select if you want the SOLIDWORKS Activation to run automatically after the install is complete or not. If choosing the Activate automatically; please provide a valid email address.<\/p>\n

Note<\/strong>: If installing a SolidNetWork License (SNL) Serial Number(s) (Typically starting with 9010 or 0010); no activation is needed as the activation is only needed on the server for the SNL.<\/p>\n

Administrative Options<\/h3>\n

The most common option here is to\u00a0Run the installation as a different user<\/strong>. Full Administrator permissions are required to install SOLIDWORKS Products. Provide the admin login here<\/p>\n

You can also choose to run programs before and after the installation, as needed.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Select Software to Install<\/h3>\n

Check and uncheck Software as needed; expand the arrows next to Products to view all items that will be installed with that Product.<\/p>\n

Note:<\/strong>\u00a0Selecting SOLIDWORKS Electrical and SOLIDWORKS PDM Client require additional option settings which will be reviewed later.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Toolbox\/Hole Wizard Options<\/h3>\n

Determine Toolbox\/Hole Wizard Options. By default, SOLIDWORKS will create a new folder (C:\\SOLIDWORKS Data<\/strong>). If the path points to an existing C:\\SOLIDWORKS Data folder, it will automatically upgrade that to the version being installed. You can also choose a Network Location for sharing this folder among users.<\/p>\n

Note:<\/strong>\u00a0Due to Read\/Write access requirements, If\u00a0SOLIDWORKS Data<\/strong>\u00a0folder exists on a Network already (from a previous version), the Toolbox will not automatically update. The recommendation is to copy the folder local to one user\u2019s machine and have the admin image point to that location. Once upgraded, it can be copied back to the network location.<\/p>\n

If you are going to have multiple versions of SOLIDWORKS installed on the same Client, then change the name of the folder (Ex: SOLIDWORKS Data_2022) to keep it separate. Once a Toolbox\/Hole Wizard is upgraded, it will no longer be accessible by older versions of the software<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

SOLIDWORKS PDM Client (if selected)<\/h3>\n

Define Product Type: PDM Standard or PDM Professional<\/p>\n

Define Type: Editor (CAD Users), Contributor (Non-CAD Users) or Viewer (Can only View files)<\/p>\n

Select any Add-ins<\/p>\n

Select whether to Set up a Vault View after the Installation<\/p>\n

Launch View Setup Wizard if Vault View is selected<\/p>\n

Electrical Options Client + Server (if selected)<\/h3>\n

For Electrical, this view is for first time setup. If the Server is going to be on a local machine, then the settings below are correct.<\/p>\n

If the Electrical Collaborative Server is already installed on a server, then replace \u2018localhost\u2019 to the name of the server it is installed on and deselect Electrical Server under Software to Install.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Creating Groups and adding Machines for Deployment<\/h2>\n

In the top-left corner you can select to create\u00a0Groups<\/strong>\u00a0or add individual\u00a0Machines<\/strong>. Groups will allow you modify Admin Image settings that are different from Global Settings for multiple machines and deploy.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Select\u00a0Group<\/strong>, then select the\u00a0Machine<\/strong>\u00a0icon to add Clients. You can add by\u00a0Machine Name<\/strong>,\u00a0IP Address<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0IP Address Range<\/strong>. Use Notes as needed.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

You can also select the\u00a0Add Multiple Machines<\/strong>\u00a0button and type or Copy\/Paste machine names to quickly add multiple Clients to one Group; click\u00a0OK.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

When complete, you can select on a\u00a0Group<\/strong>\u00a0or specific\u00a0Machine<\/strong>\u00a0and go to\u00a0Software to Install<\/strong>\u00a0to choose what will be used for that Group.<\/p>\n

\"\"When done click the Change<\/strong>\u00a0button again to save your Changes.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Deployment<\/h3>\n

You can choose to deploy the SOLIDWORKS Admin Image either Manually or Automatically. In order to have logs and status updates from the Clients, the client account must have a minimum of \u2018Read\/Write\u2019 permissions to the folder\u00a0<admin_image>\\64bit\\logs<\/strong>.\u00a0Right-click<\/strong>\u00a0on the logs folder.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Choose\u00a0Properties<\/strong>\u00a0and modify the attributes at the bottom and uncheck\u00a0Read-Only,\u00a0<\/strong>click\u00a0OK.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Manually<\/h3>\n

Select the\u00a0Deploy Manually<\/strong>\u00a0tab and click\u00a0Send Email.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

This will create an email that includes a link for the users to begin the install their SOLIDWORKS Products.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

You can also browse to the folder\u00a0<admin_image>\\SOLIDWORKS 20XX SPX<\/strong>\u00a0and double-click the\u00a0StartSWInstall.hta<\/strong>\u00a0file to begin the install as well.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Automatically<\/h3>\n

This option pushes the installation to the Clients silently and does not require any action from the user. This does require specific permissions to be set up to install correctly. The specifics of this are provided in the\u00a0SOLIDWORKS Installation and Administrative Guide<\/a>\u00a0under\u00a0Administrative Images \u2013> Automatic Deploy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The guide can also walk through how to\u00a0Deploy via Command Line.<\/strong><\/p>\n

When using\u00a0Deploy Automatically<\/strong>, you can select\u00a0Groups<\/strong>\u00a0and\/or\u00a0Machines<\/strong>\u00a0to deploy; choose to Deploy\u00a0Now<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0Later<\/strong>\u00a0and define a\u00a0Time<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Date<\/strong>. You can then choose to\u00a0Install\/Upgrade<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0Uninstall<\/strong>\u00a0as well as\u00a0Reboot the computer automatically<\/strong>\u00a0(recommended).<\/p>\n

Enter\u00a0Client Credentials<\/strong>\u00a0for Admin rights.<\/p>\n

Test<\/strong>\u00a0the Deployment, if all is satisfactory, then select\u00a0Deploy.<\/strong><\/p>\n

At any time, click on the\u00a0Help<\/strong>\u00a0button on the bottom-right for more assistance in specific areas.<\/p>\n

Upgrading<\/h3>\n

When a new version or service pack is released, the Clients will need to be upgraded with a new Admin Image. Using the same steps at the beginning of this blog, launch the new Installation Manager and choose\u00a0Create an administrative image\u2026<\/strong>\u00a0and choose\u00a0Create a new image using settings and files from an existing image<\/strong>.\u00a0Browse\u00a0<\/strong>to the location of the old admin image and select the folder\u00a0<admin_image>\\SOLIDWORKS 20XX SPX;<\/strong>\u00a0click\u00a0Next<\/strong>\u00a0and follow the prompts to complete the new Admin Image.<\/p>\n

Additional Information and Suggestions<\/h3>\n
    \n
  1. If a user was installed with an Admin Image and is having issues; you cannot run a repair from the Control Panel \u2013 Programs and Features. Re-running the image that was used for the install will act as a repair.<\/li>\n
  2. If you find that the Admin Image is having issues installing (typically because of a permissions issue); try copying the SOLIDWORKS 20XX SPX folder from the Admin Image location and copy locally on the client where they have Read\/Write permissions. Some place like their Desktop or My Documents folder.<\/li>\n
  3. If several users are having the same issue after being installed by an Admin Image, typically that will suggest some sort of corruption of the Admin Image. The recommendation would be to re-download a new Installation Manager (IM) and create a new Admin Image and Re-deploy.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
