Unfortunately not everything can be fully determined prior to setting everything up, so changes are bound to happen, such as renaming SOLIDWORKS parts, assemblies or drawings. Below is an outline that will allow you to rename your parts and assemblies without losing any information that was created or captured. Before we begin, make sure that SOLIDWORKS has the ability to rename parts from within the feature tree by enabling Tools\u00a0&gt;\u00a0Options\u00a0&gt;\u00a0System Options\u00a0&gt;\u00a0FeatureManager\u00a0&gt;\u00a0Allow component files to be renamed from FeatureManager tree. A full link to the instructions for renaming SOLIDWORKS files can be found here.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/help.solidworks.com\/2017\/english\/solidworks\/sldworks\/HIDD_RENAME_COMP.htm\">http:\/\/help.solidworks.com\/2017\/english\/solidworks\/sldworks\/HIDD_RENAME_COMP.htm<\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you need to rename a SOLIDWORKS file, you can do so by choosing to rename it inside of the feature tree by right clicking on the file and then selecting \u201cRename\u201d. This will temporarily rename the file until you save and close this parent file. You will also have the opportunity to update any references that the file may be used in.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3684 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/SOLIDWORKS-1522090100897.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3685 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/SOLIDWORKS-1522090102961.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once your part has been renamed through SOLIDWORKS and saved, the file will have a new name inside of Windows Explorer and inside of SOLIDWORKS.<\/p>\n<p>The original file name: \u201cTier 1.sldprt\u201d<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3686 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/SOLIDWORKS-1522090104330.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The new file name: \u201cBase.sldprt\u201d<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3687 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/SOLIDWORKS-1522090105600.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now that everything is taken care of the SOLIDWORKS side, we need to update the information inside of DriveWorks. If you open the DriveWorks add-in, you will notice that it can no longer find the \u201cTier 1.sldprt\u201d file while \u201cBase.sldprt\u201d is considered a new, uncaptured file.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3688 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/SOLIDWORKS-1522090106877.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We will need to change this using the DriveWorks Data Management tool. Since we do not want to lose everything that we have captured and driven for the Tier 1 part, we will have to tell DriveWorks that this is now a different file name and should point to the new name instead. You will first need to open the DriveWorks Data Management tool and log into the DriveWorks group. (Don\u2019t forget to check the \u201cData Backed Up\u201d box!). Then go to the \u201cCaptured Information\u201d section and you will notice that the file that was renamed is considered missing.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3689 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/SOLIDWORKS-1522090108115.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To fix this, simply right click on the missing file and choose \u201cChange Location\u201d. You can then re-browse to the file that had its name changed and re-select it. You may need to change the file type setting at the bottom as it will automatically default to the original file name. When you find your file, select it and choose \u201cOpen\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3690 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/SOLIDWORKS-1522090109488.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now that the file has been repointed, it will no longer be considered missing and all of your rules that you had originally set up will be set for the new file name as well!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3691 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/SOLIDWORKS-1522090110742.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Using the DriveWorks add-in inside of SOLIDWORKS, you can refresh the captured file assembly structure and notice that the correct file is now being used.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3692 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/SOLIDWORKS-1522090112859.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Derek M.
