{"id":177041,"date":"2022-04-26T18:04:23","date_gmt":"2022-04-26T22:04:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/?p=177041"},"modified":"2022-04-26T18:04:23","modified_gmt":"2022-04-26T22:04:23","slug":"using-sketched-contours-to-create-3d-extrusions-in-draftsight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/?p=177041","title":{"rendered":"Using Sketched Contours to Create 3D Extrusions in DraftSight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In my last blog \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/blog\/2022\/02\/introduction-to-basic-3d-shapes-in-draftsight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Introduction to Basic 3D Shapes in DraftSight<\/a> \u2013 I demonstrated the methods for creating the basic 3D shapes using DraftSight Premium or DraftSight Enterprise Plus. I want to continue that demonstration by showing you how to use sketched contours to create 3D extrusions.<\/p>\n<p>To create a solid from a contour you will need to use the <strong>EXTRUDE<\/strong> Command.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>From the DraftSight Help:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe Extrude command creates solid primitives by extruding closed 2D entities such as PolyLines, Circles, Ellipses, and Regions.<br \/>\nUse the Extrude command to create 3D solids or 3D surfaces.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I will start with a simple shape from the SOLIDWORKS Essentials Training Exercises.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"726\" height=\"374\" class=\"wp-image-177042 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/a-picture-containing-line-chart-description-autom.png\" alt=\"A picture containing line chart Description automatically generated\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/a-picture-containing-line-chart-description-autom.png 726w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/a-picture-containing-line-chart-description-autom-300x155.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 726px) 100vw, 726px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then create the shape in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/software\/draftsight-2d-cad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DraftSight<\/a> using the <strong>Polyline<\/strong> tool. By using the <strong>Polyline<\/strong> tool a closed contour of continuous lines will be created.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1006\" height=\"606\" class=\"wp-image-177043 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/a-screenshot-of-a-computer-description-automatica-2.png\" alt=\"A screenshot of a computer Description automatically generated with medium confidence\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/a-screenshot-of-a-computer-description-automatica-2.png 1006w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/a-screenshot-of-a-computer-description-automatica-2-300x181.png 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/a-screenshot-of-a-computer-description-automatica-2-768x463.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1006px) 100vw, 1006px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is what the Polyline contour looks like when a single line is selected<\/p>\n<p>If you draw the shape using the <strong>LINE<\/strong> tool. It will look like this when all of the lines are selected.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1036\" height=\"608\" class=\"wp-image-177044 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/a-screenshot-of-a-computer-description-automatica-3.png\" alt=\"A screenshot of a computer Description automatically generated with medium confidence\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/a-screenshot-of-a-computer-description-automatica-3.png 1036w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/a-screenshot-of-a-computer-description-automatica-3-300x176.png 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/a-screenshot-of-a-computer-description-automatica-3-1024x601.png 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/a-screenshot-of-a-computer-description-automatica-3-768x451.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1036px) 100vw, 1036px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Polyline sketch is a single region while the Line sketch is 5 separate entities. To use it for the <strong>EXTRUDE<\/strong> command you will need to convert the lines into a Polyline or into a 2D Region entity.<\/p>\n<p>From the DraftSight Help:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/help.solidworks.com\/2022\/english\/draftsight\/html\/hlpid_draw_region.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Creating\u00a0Regions<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>The\u00a0<\/em><strong><em>Region<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0command transforms an entity that forms a closed shape into a 2D\u00a0Region\u00a0entity. You can use the command to combine all entities of any closed loop \u2013 such as closed PolyLines (including polygons and Rings), Circles, Ellipses, and closed Splines \u2013 into one entity.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>After creating a\u00a0Region, there is little visual difference on screen except when the original entity had a width, thickness, or LineWeight. This information is lost when you create a\u00a0region\u00a0from such entities.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>A\u00a0Region\u00a0is a planar solid entity. If you set\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/help.solidworks.com\/2022\/english\/DraftSight\/html\/hlpid_view_shademode.htm?verRedirect=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ShadeView<\/a>\u00a0mode to\u00a0<\/em><strong><em>Flat<\/em><\/strong><em>, you will see that the\u00a0Region\u00a0is a surface, not simply a boundary contour.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>If the source entities of the\u00a0Region\u00a0are hatched, the Hatch loses associativity to the boundary. You must apply the Hatch to the\u00a0Region\u00a0entity again.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>You can also create\u00a0Regions with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/help.solidworks.com\/2022\/english\/DraftSight\/html\/hlpid_draw_bpoly.htm?verRedirect=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AreaBoundary<\/a>\u00a0command by setting the resulting entity type for boundaries to\u00a0<\/em><strong><em>Region<\/em><\/strong><em>.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Another method would be to convert the lines to a continuous polyline using either the <strong>WELD<\/strong> or <strong>JOIN<\/strong> command.<\/p>\n<p>From the DraftSight Help:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/help.solidworks.com\/2022\/english\/draftsight\/html\/hlpid_edit_join.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Welding Entities<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Use the\u00a0<\/em><strong><em>Weld<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0command to merge two entities into one. You can merge Lines, open PolyLines, Arcs, elliptical Arcs, or open Splines. You can also transform Arcs to Circles and elliptical Arcs to Ellipses.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Use these guidelines when\u00a0welding entities:<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Lines must be aligned in one direction. You can join Lines that are co-linear, in which case the farthest end points remain and a new line connects them.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Lines that are not co-linear, without space between them, are joined to a PolyLine.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Arcs must share the same center point and radius. Arcs are joined counterclockwise beginning from the source entity.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Elliptical Arcs must lie on the same Ellipse. Elliptical Arcs are joined counterclockwise beginning from the source entity.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>PolyLines can join Lines, Arcs, or PolyLines resulting in a single PolyLine. You can only merge entities that lie end-to-end to the source PolyLine and attached specified entities. The entities must lie on the same plane. Unlike joining Lines, Arcs, or elliptical Arcs, you cannot join entities with a space between them if the source entity is a PolyLine. Note that the\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/help.solidworks.com\/2022\/english\/DraftSight\/html\/hlpid_edit_polyedit.htm?verRedirect=1\"><em>EditPolyLine<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0command also lets you join entities to existing PolyLines.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Splines must have no gaps between them. The appearance of the Spline changes if the transition between the origin entities is not tangential.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Either command will prepare the sketch for the <strong>EXTRUDE<\/strong> command.<\/p>\n<p>Change the view to SW Isometric.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1222\" height=\"654\" class=\"wp-image-177045 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/solidworks-1650906915514.png\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/solidworks-1650906915514.png 1222w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/solidworks-1650906915514-300x161.png 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/solidworks-1650906915514-1024x548.png 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/solidworks-1650906915514-768x411.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1222px) 100vw, 1222px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Type <strong>EXTRUDE<\/strong> in the command line. Set the height to 20 and the result should look like this:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1154\" height=\"694\" class=\"wp-image-177046 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/a-picture-containing-black-description-automatica.png\" alt=\"A picture containing black Description automatically generated\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/a-picture-containing-black-description-automatica.png 1154w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/a-picture-containing-black-description-automatica-300x180.png 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/a-picture-containing-black-description-automatica-1024x616.png 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/a-picture-containing-black-description-automatica-768x462.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1154px) 100vw, 1154px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To change the appearance use the <strong>HIDE<\/strong> or <strong>Hideview<\/strong> command.
