Absolutely! A quick Webex later, problem solved. Here\u2019s an example on how to accomplish reuse sketches in SOLIDWORKS.<\/p>\n<p>Here, we have an assembly with two parts mated together.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"864\" height=\"622\" class=\"wp-image-191376\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/word-image-191375-1.png\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/word-image-191375-1.png 864w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/word-image-191375-1-300x216.png 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/word-image-191375-1-768x553.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 864px) 100vw, 864px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Use Assembly Sketches to Reuse Existing Part Sketches<\/h2>\n<p>We need a new outside bracket to attach to the two mounting holes where the two parts mate together. We could create a new part from scratch outside of the assembly, but that requires a lot of measurements. So, let&#8217;s reuse the sketches to create a bracket in the assembly. We accomplish this by starting with an assembly sketch. Create the sketch by converting features into geometry as shown here.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-191377\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/word-image-191375-2.png\" alt=\"Reusing sketches in SOLIDWORKS starts with an assembly sketch. Create the assembly sketch by converting features into geometry as shown here.\" width=\"1055\" height=\"609\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/word-image-191375-2.png 1055w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/word-image-191375-2-300x173.png 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/word-image-191375-2-1024x591.png 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/word-image-191375-2-768x443.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1055px) 100vw, 1055px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now, in the Feature Tree, we see our new assembly sketch located below the mate folder.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-191378\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/word-image-191375-3.png\" alt=\"Convert entities when reusing a sketch creates a new sketch in the feature tree below the mates.\" width=\"380\" height=\"393\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/word-image-191375-3.png 380w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/word-image-191375-3-290x300.png 290w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 380px) 100vw, 380px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the assembly, highlight the sketch and copy it (can use CTRL + C).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1668\" height=\"855\" class=\"wp-image-191379\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/word-image-191375-4.png\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/word-image-191375-4.png 1668w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/word-image-191375-4-300x154.png 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/word-image-191375-4-1024x525.png 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/word-image-191375-4-768x394.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1668px) 100vw, 1668px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While the sketch is on your clipboard, create a new part drawing. In the new part, and this is very important, select a reference plane first then PASTE (or CTRL V) the sketch.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-191380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/diagram-description-automatically-generated.png\" alt=\"Your new sketch in SOLIDWORKS can reuse as much or as little of your original as you want.\" width=\"1488\" height=\"778\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/diagram-description-automatically-generated.png 1488w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/diagram-description-automatically-generated-300x157.png 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/diagram-description-automatically-generated-1024x535.png 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/diagram-description-automatically-generated-768x402.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1488px) 100vw, 1488px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now you are ready to edit the sketch for your new design. If you do delete the sketch, be sure to watch for references in the sketch to the original parts. You might end up with some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goengineer.com\/blog\/repair-broken-references-in-solidworks\">broken references<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I hope you found this helpful!
