In this newest release, you\u2019ll find that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/software\/solidworks-mbd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SOLIDWORKS MBD<\/a> has also been updated with several enhancements. As always, SOLIDWORKS spends all year looking through your suggestions to improve their products and incorporates the best ones into the latest release. Let&#8217;s take a look at some of my top enhancements to SOLIDWORKS MBD in 2023. If you want to follow along in video format, check out the video below.<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sU0FjiJ9Hxs\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Improved 3D PDF Dimensions and Annotations<\/h2>\n<p>One of my favorite enhancements is the improvement in the display of our dimensions and other annotations. These are now viewable in the 3D views and viewports, with no data loss. This also applies to <a href=\"https:\/\/helpx.adobe.com\/acrobat\/using\/displaying-3d-models-pdfs.html\">3D PDFs<\/a> showing component dimensions, feature dimensions, and DimXpert annotations.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-192457\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/diagram-engineering-drawing-description-automati.jpeg\" alt=\"This image shows the improved 3D PDF annotations and dimensions provided by SOLIDWORKS MBD 2023.\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/diagram-engineering-drawing-description-automati.jpeg 1920w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/diagram-engineering-drawing-description-automati-300x169.jpeg 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/diagram-engineering-drawing-description-automati-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/diagram-engineering-drawing-description-automati-768x432.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Modify Datum for Auto Dimension Schemes<\/h2>\n<p>It is very common to use the Auto Dimension Scheme when you&#8217;re starting your MBD project. This tool gives us plenty of options, including Plus and Minus or Geometric Tolerancing types. For this prismatic part, we can define the datum planes by model faces. For the primary Datum, we use these four top faces together as a group. The side and bottom faces of the model will round up the selection of the Secondary and Tertiary Datums.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" class=\"wp-image-192458\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/graphical-user-interface-description-automaticall.jpeg\" alt=\"Graphical user interface Description automatically generated with low confidence\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/graphical-user-interface-description-automaticall.jpeg 1920w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/graphical-user-interface-description-automaticall-300x169.jpeg 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/graphical-user-interface-description-automaticall-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/graphical-user-interface-description-automaticall-768x432.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next, we need to identify the model features that we want to define the tolerancing of. We do this by selecting the faces of the cuts, extrusions, and other features. Once complete, SOLIDWORKS indicates which faces are adequately toleranced with green shading.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-192459\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/diagram-description-automatically-generated.jpeg\" alt=\"Green faces indicate proper tolerancing in SOLIDWORKS MBD. Looking at our tolerance status after this change, SOLIDWORKS isn&#8217;t highlighting the new geometry in green like the rest of the model.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-192460\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/diagram-schematic-description-automatically-gene.jpeg\" alt=\"If you add a new face or feature to a model, SOLIDWORKS MBD does not automatically tolerance that face or feature.\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/diagram-schematic-description-automatically-gene.jpeg 1920w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/diagram-schematic-description-automatically-gene-300x169.jpeg 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/diagram-schematic-description-automatically-gene-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/diagram-schematic-description-automatically-gene-768x432.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now, in SOLIDWORKS MBD 2023, we can edit features of items like our previously created datums. This makes it easy to add the top face of this new extrusion to the existing group of faces that represent the Primary Datum.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-192461\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/graphical-user-interface-diagram-description-aut.jpeg\" alt=\"SOLIDWORKS MBD 2023 lets you edit your tolerance features, making it easier to ensure your model is always within spec.\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/graphical-user-interface-diagram-description-aut.jpeg 1920w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/graphical-user-interface-diagram-description-aut-300x169.jpeg 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/graphical-user-interface-diagram-description-aut-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/graphical-user-interface-diagram-description-aut-768x432.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>SOLIDWORKS MBD Wedge Feature Support<\/h2>\n<p>Let\u2019s look at the cut-out at the top edge of this part. Here, we have two opposing nonparallel faces. I have some great news for you. SOLIDWORKS MBD 2023 now supports wedge features! We can use wedge geometry to define a geometric tolerance or even create a wedge datum.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-192462\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/a-picture-containing-text-map-description-automa.jpeg\" alt=\"This image shows SOLIDWORKS MBD 2023 support for wedge features.\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/a-picture-containing-text-map-description-automa.jpeg 1920w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/a-picture-containing-text-map-description-automa-300x169.jpeg 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/a-picture-containing-text-map-description-automa-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/a-picture-containing-text-map-description-automa-768x432.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Added ISO Standard Symbols<\/h2>\n<p>It is well known that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/software\/solidworks-3d-cad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SOLIDWORKS<\/a> has a massive library of symbols. In 2022, SOLIDWORKS added additional Tolerance symbols. Well, SOLIDWORKS MBD 2023 takes this to a whole new level. You can now apply ISO 14405-1:2016 standards-based symbols to dimensions and tolerances. You can easily add these symbols straight from the symbol library, or from the Tolerance Modifier section in the DimXpert Property Manager.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-192463\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/graphical-user-interface-diagram-description-aut-1.jpeg\" alt=\"SOLIDWORKS MBD has added the ISO symbol library to an already extensive list of symbols.\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/graphical-user-interface-diagram-description-aut-1.jpeg 1920w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/graphical-user-interface-diagram-description-aut-1-300x169.jpeg 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/graphical-user-interface-diagram-description-aut-1-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/graphical-user-interface-diagram-description-aut-1-768x432.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>MBD Helps with &#8220;Hanging&#8221; Dimensions<\/h2>\n<p>Here is another excellent enhancement to SOLIDWORKS MBD 2023. This machined part contains holes in overhanging geometry. It is easy to define a locating dimension to call out the vertical position of this hole. Once placed, the annotation can be difficult to interpret due to the dimension\u2019s extension line terminating out in space.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" class=\"wp-image-192464\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/diagram-description-automatically-generated-1.jpeg\" alt=\"Diagram Description automatically generated\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/diagram-description-automatically-generated-1.jpeg 1920w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/diagram-description-automatically-generated-1-300x169.jpeg 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/diagram-description-automatically-generated-1-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/diagram-description-automatically-generated-1-768x432.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now, in SOLIDWORKS 2023, we have a new setting that controls the display of the dimension in this situation.
