What is 3DEXPERIENCE SOLIDWORKS?
For those of you that have heard about this tool we hope to share some insights about what 3DEXPERIENCE SOLIDWORKS is and is not by answering some standard questions that have been coming up. Now for those that need a little background on what is the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform here are some help links that will get you started. There are many more but you can find them at our YouTube channel.

Question: “Is this SOLIDWORKS running on cloud”?
Answer: No. The 3DEXPERIENCE SOLIDWORKS role grants a version of SOLIDWORKS (called SOLIDWORKS Connected) that is designed for those people that have chosen the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform to store and leverage their designs on the cloud. This application is. Your data is on cloud and cached locally, but SOLIDWORKS Connected is installed to your computer’s hard disk.
Question: “How does the licensing work, do I get a serial number?”
Answer: Different from conventional SOLIDWORKS licensing, this validates directly thru the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform licensing on the cloud. This gives you versatility to have you license with you and your data anywhere that you go. If you have an internet connection on a machine able to run SOLIDWORKS, you can have platform download SOLIDWORKS Connected and install with a few clicks.
Question: “You mentioned saving locally, do I have an option to save to my machine locally?”
Answer: Yes, you can save your data locally after your first save to the platform by doing a “Export SOLIDWORKS Files…” from the File menu. Remember this variant of SOLIDWORKS (SOLIDWORKS Connected) is meant for working on the platform so that is where your data will be saved and shared with your team.
Question: “How do I access my data, won’t working across the internet be slow?”
Answer: The data is found from either the open dialog or the 3DEXPERIENCE task pane. Just like working on a modern on-premise product data management systems, your data is being cached local while you work and only the changes you make are sent back up to the cloud.
Question: “Show I used 3DEXPERIENCE SOLIDWORKS if we are currently using a PDM System today?”
Answer: Probably not, but everyone is different in their needs for data management. Feel free to reach out to one of our 3DEXPEREINCE tech team mentioned above, to see what makes sense for your company.
Question: “Who is 3DEXPERIENCE SOLIDWORKS suited for?”
Answer: 3DEXPERIENCE SOLIDWORKS is for you if you’re looking to embrace a cloud based solutions for your data management and looking to reduce IT overhead by using a SAAS (solution as a service) model. Once the data is on the platform there are many other applications that can be leveraged using your data such as CAM, SIM, and Project planning just to name a few.
There are currently three different offers, just like SOLIDWORKS Standard, Professional, and Premium. If you look below, you’ll notice Collaborative Industry and Business Innovator, these are roles on the platform just like 3DEXPERIENCE SOLIDWORKS. If you are wondering, a role when it comes to the platform is a collection of different applications (apps for short) that help you fulfill one or many roles you have in your company. Collaborative Industry Innovator and Collaborative Business Innovator required roles for the SOLIDWORKS Connected so they are part of the offer. Industry Innovator give you over 18 different applications ranging from data, tasks, and change action management. Business Innovator is the base license that everyone that connects to the platform requires. It has over 22 different applications allowing you to create custom dashboards of your data and tools for viewing and marking up 3D content on the platform. You will notice there is 3D Sculptor and 3D Creator in that list these are applications that run completely in the browser. The role 3D Scupltor includes an app called xShape that is a sub-division modeler, its like working with virtual clay. 3D Creator includes an app called xDesign which is a parametric CAD app. If you’d like to see those in action watch the SOLIDWORKS and the Power of the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform.
