Restoring All SOLIDWORKS File Associations

SolidWorks files can be easily opened directly from Window’s Explorer. However, with multiple versions of SolidWorks on a single computer, the file sometimes will not open in the version you want. By restoring file associations within the System Options, this can easily be fixed. Instead of opening the files into a SolidWorks version that is incorrect, it will bring up the “SolidWorks Launcher” which allows you to choose which version of SolidWorks to open. Keep in mind, if you have installed SolidWorks 2020 SP03 or newer, restoring file associations is not in the same spot as previous versions.

To restore file associations for 2020 SP03 or newer:

1) Right-click on the SolidWorks application and choose “Run as Administrator”

, Restoring All SOLIDWORKS File Associations

2) Once open, go to System Options>General and click on the large “Restore File Associations” button

, Restoring All SOLIDWORKS File Associations

3) Once you have done that, open Window’s Explorer and choose a SolidWorks part file. Right-click on the file and go to “Open with.” Scroll down to “Choose another app” and select “SolidWorks Launcher.” Make sure to check the box that states “Always use this app to open .SLDPRT files”

2) Once open, go to System Options>File Explorer and click on “Restore File Associations”

, Restoring All SOLIDWORKS File Associations

3) Follow steps 3, 4, and 5 from the 2020 SP03 instructions

If you need to change your File Associations manually, follow these steps:

1) In the Window’s Start menu, go to the Control Panel>Programs>Default Programs

2) Click on “Set program access and computer defaults”

, Restoring All SOLIDWORKS File Associations

3) Scroll down and select “Choose default apps by file type”

, Restoring All SOLIDWORKS File Associations

4) Scroll to find the “.sldasm,” “.slddrw” and “.sldprt” file types and set the default application to “SOLIDWORKS Launcher.”

, Restoring All SOLIDWORKS File Associations

These are the correct steps for Windows 10 computers. If you are using a different Windows version, the interface will be different. Feel free to reach out to our tech support team with additional questions.
