SOLIDWORKS 2019 What’s New – Specifying Tolerances for Hole Wizard Holes – #SW2019

SOLIDWORKS 2019 is on the way and will be released in just a few weeks. We are always excited to show you the new features that will immediately change the way you design your products. Some of these new features will get lots of attention while other enhancements can be overlooked. While It might not be flashy, it can be just as useful when a longtime feature gets a subtle addition. This is especially true if it is a feature that you use very frequently. In this article, we will look at the enhanced Hole Wizard feature in SOLIDWORKS 2019.

The Hole Wizard feature was first introduced in SOLIDWORKS 2000. Back then, it existed in a pop-up window and contained very few options for the type of holes. From moving the interface to the property manager, adding slot geometry, to allowing 3D sketches for hole Locations, Hole Wizard has seen several enhancements over the years. SOLIDWORKS 2019 continues this progression by allowing you to easily apply tolerances for your Hole Wizard holes. This is done at the bottom of the Hole Wizard property manager when defining the hole type.

The initial drop-down menu allows you to select the characteristic that you would like to add the tolerance to.

The additional menus allow you to define the tolerance type and precision.

For this example, let’s focus on the large Counter-bore hole on this machined component.

In the Hole Wizard feature, bilateral tolerances are added for both the diameter and the counterbore diameter.

As you would expect, this information is easily shown in your SOLIDWORKS drawings. The Hole Callout command will instantly create the note containing the dimensions required for manufacturing this geometry. These dimensions include the new numerical tolerance information that we defined in the Hole Wizard feature.
