Mirroring Parts in SOLIDWORKS with Features and Sketches
I want to create a mirrored part in SOLIDWORKS but I want to have the flexibility to make changes to the mirrored part when needed. When you mirror a part in an assembly for instance, you are first given the option to select the components you want to mirror.
After selecting the components, you hit the blue next arrow in the upper right corner and you are able to select the part orientation. Also, you can select to make the part an opposite hand version if you want.
After selecting the create opposite hand version, hit next and you are given the option on how to save the opposite hand version. You can either add a prefix or suffix and where to save the file.
Once you select create new files and select next, you are given the options on what you want to transfer over in the new file.
You can transfer over the sketches and hole wizard data but it will be referencing the original part. Select break link to original part and the part the link will be broken and you will have total control to change the part as you see fit.
Here you can see the parts are mirrored in the assembly. If the feature is expanded, you can see the new part in the tree.
If we open the part in its own window, you can see that you have no link to the original part and have full control to modify the dimensions.
Hope this helps! Keep checking back for more insightful tips from Computer Aided Technology!!
