, The 3DEXPERIENCE Podcast

Today I’m going to talk about tech but in a different way. I want to make you and my SOLIDWORKS friends aware of an extremely informative and interesting podcast out there called, “The 3DEXPERIENCE” podcast. This monthly podcast will discuss everything from business, to latest technologies, as it relates to the process of design and manufacturing.

Your more than qualified hosts for “The 3DEXPERIENCE” podcast are John Milbery, Technical Director at Dassault Systèmes – SOLIDWORKS and Mike Buchli, Senior Product Manager at Dassault Systèmes – SOLIDWORKS. John and Mike have over 50 years of manufacturing experience combined. I feel every episode has very engaging guests and their conversations are in-depth and entertaining on topics which relate to how other’s in the industry are handling their processes in order to be successful.

“The 3DEXPERIENCE Podcast” has already released multiple episodes for anyone to listen to, but I wanted to focus on their latest podcast, Episode #10 – “Driving Business Decisions By Using The Correct Data Analytics” with their guest, George Korn, from DELMIAWORKS. My reasoning to focus on this episode versus the others is due introduce to you Dassault Systèmes newest product acquisitions called DELMIAWORKS (formerly IQMS). DELMIAWORKS/IQMS is a tool I wish I had when I was in the industry to track my company’s ERP* and MRP** software in one overall linked ecosystem. Not having our systems linked to each other to get true, real time data would have “truly” made us more efficient in all departments during our projects.

That is why DELMIAWORKS is my most favorite of the newest tools being brought to our customers to help increase their efficiency. Because we all know manufacturing is a competitive place. Every day, companies are competing in local and global markets to win business and increase profits. Which we all know, at the end of the day, is easier said than done.

How do the most innovative companies stay ahead of the pack?

They use integrated systems that allow them to make decisions based on analytics vs. a gut feel or guesstimating. In this episode, the guys chat with George Korn from DELMIAWORKS to understand how ERP* – MRP** – MES*** systems play an integral part in making the correct decisions based on real-time analytics. The conversation addresses how technologies and processes keep changing and evolving which is how DELMIAWORKS comes into the picture as an overall solution for connecting, monitoring and analyzing real-time ERP*/MRP** systems. And that’s where the beauty lies for using and implementing DELMIAWORKS. Because it can provide an overall, tailored solution for any small, medium or large manufacturing customers.

What is DELMIAWORKS?

DELMIAWORKS provides for manufacturers a reliable system for planning, scheduling, executing, and measuring results which is accomplished with Forecasting, MRP, Production Scheduling, Quality and RealTime™. Production Monitoring modules. Since it was born on the shop floor, DELMIAWORKS manufacturing ERP* software can be tailored specifically for any factory’s environment. DELMIAWORKS on live and on display monitoring the CNC machines in the Shop Floor 2019 area in the Partner Pavilion last year at SOLIDWORKS WORLD 2019 and video tour by Mike Buchli. It will be on display again at the upcoming 3DEXPERIENCE WORLD 2020 in Nashville, TN on February 10 -12, 2020.

Companies are always looking to improve their processes to stay competitive but often, they end up buying lots of disconnected systems. Don’t get me wrong, these systems help, but since they are not connected to each other. Companies find themselves collecting their desired data from all different systems and putting it put together some reports.  By the time the reports are created, they are already out of date. Such as, the Engineering BOM vs. Manufacturing BOM.  As soon as an EBOM and MBOM are released for production with the manufacturing detail drawings and as soon as there is an ECR (Engineering Change Request) or ECO (Engineering Change Order) generated, the MBOM is immediately out of spec. This is where we witness the true beauty of DELMIAWORKS by connecting all these systems and processes to allow everyone to work on the correct and current data.   The biggest area for improvement in a manufacturing company today is evaluating processes.  The problem is finding the right information to make an educated decision.  DELMIAWORKS delivers a solution to the customer which we refer to as a “System Wide, One Source of Truth” for tracking and searching their data with around 140 separated product modules to choose from.  From forecasting to estimating to quality process management to capacity planning for an example of some of the modules offered.

The goal for each 3DEXPERIENCE Podcast episode, is to have a conversation with people to educate others on what is going on in the industry and the ways that others can implement strategies to be successful. “So our customers can be better tomorrow, than they were today.”

Episode 10 – “Driving Business Decisions by Using The Correct Data Analytics” – George Korn, DELMIAWORKS

I’ve found every episode to be extremely interesting and very informative. No matter which episode you listen to first. You will not be disappointed after listening to any episode. Some of my favorites include Episode 5 and Episode 9 due to me being a car enthusiast.

Episode 5 is a discussion with the dynamic duo and co-founders of Ringbrothers, Jim and Mike Ring. They spend time chatting about building show winning SEMA cars, advanced manufacturing and of course, HORSEPOWER! Just recently, Ringbrothers 1969 Camaro “Valkyrja” was awarded the top honors at the 2019 SEMA Show, with the Spring Green, Wisconsin-based shop winning the coveted Battle of the Builders award for olive drab-like green colored Chevy Camaro.

Many people in the SOLIDWORKS community were first introduced to Ringbrothers at SOLIDWORKS WORLD 2018 when they were featured on the main stage of the General Session – Day One. They were recognized for doing their design to manufacture by using SOLIDWORKS tools. Using SOLIDWORKS 3D CAD for designing and SOLIDWORKS CAM for manufacturing for their 1,100 HP Hellcat powered 1972 AMC Javelin Defiant build for the 2017 SEMA car show. We at CATI, were more familiar Ringbrothers, since they have been a Computer Aided Technology SOLIDWORKS customer since 2015.

Episode 9 is also car related and it is a discussion with Aaron Kaufman. Formerly, Aaron was working with Richard Rawlings at Gas Monkey Garage and on the show called “Fast N Loud” on the Discovery Channel. Now he is currently the owner of Arclight Fabrication and host of Discovery Channel’s Aaron Needs A Job. The conversation covers building cars, manufacturing, starting a business, and learning about his experiences in becoming a leader in the aftermarket automotive industry.
