SOLIDWORKS: How Do I Open SOLIDWORKS 2017 Files in SOLIDWORKS 2016?

How to Open SOLIDWORKS 2017 Files in SOLIDWORKS 2016   With every new release, we get phone calls asking how to open up SOLIDWORKS files in the previous version. SOLIDWORKS 2017 is no different. Here are a couple of scenarios I have seen recently:   1. We are running SOLIDWORKS 2016 and a vendor has sent me a SOLIDWORKS 2017 file. How do I open the SOLIDWORKS 2017 file in my SOLIDWORKS 2016? 2. I have a file from that is saved as a 2017 version. Is there any way to open that file without having the SOLIDWORKS 2017 version?     The short answer: File-Open. You can open SOLIDWORKS

SOLIDWORKS 2017 What’s New: Extrude from Any Size Planar Face – #SW2017

Extrude from Any Size Planar Face   Were you one of those kids who could NOT color inside the lines? You didn’t want to play it safe. You were a risk taker! Now as an engineer, didn’t it frustrate you that your CAD software forced you to stay inside the lines? Like how in SOLIDWORKS 2016, when you wanted to create an Extrude feature using From > Surface/Face/Plane, the sketch had to be fully contained within the boundaries of the non-planar surface or face? If it did not, the feature would fail to be created. FAIL!     Well, SOLIDWORKS has listened to all you rebellious kids at heart. You can

SOLIDWORKS 2017 What’s New: Window Selection for Instances to Skip – #SW2017

Window Selection for Instances to Skip   One of the biggest complaints about Patterns in SOLIDWORKS is not having the ability to skip multiple instances. So, say that you are creating a large linear pattern and you need to skip maybe 100 or 1000 instances. Up to now, you had to manually pick every instance one by one. Although this accomplishes what you are trying to do, it wastes a lot of time and is a very tedious process. SOLIDWORKS 2017 introduces Window Selection to Pattern features. You now have the ability to use box and lasso selection to add or remove instances to skip in patterns. Note that this

I was excited to compare what shortcuts I know with the cheat sheet. I picked up a couple that I didn’t know about or that I had forgot about. For example, if you want to open up a file

SOLIDWORKS Customer Request Corner – How Do You Fix SOLIDWORKS Errors Using File Locations?

A common theme in the questions submitted to the Customer Request Corner section of the CATI Tech Notes Blog is File Locations. Here are some questions that have come in that are fixed by adjusting the File Locations: 1. Why are my templates gone since I updated my SOLIDWORKS?2. I am trying to do a callout in a drawing and am getting the error message, "Symbol library (GTOL.SYM) is missing."5. Where is my design library? It is missing. I will stop

SOLIDWORKS Customer Request Corner – How Do You Disable Instant2D?

The Customer Request Corner section of the CATI Tech Notes Blog was introduced last month by Computer Aided Technology (CATI). Most of the topics that the CATI Technical Services team blogs about are common issues that are dealt with in Technical Support. Customer's now how a chance to tell us what they would like to see blogged about. These are some of the questions that came in about the same issue: 1. What do I have to do to get the Dimension Spin Box to come up when editing sketch dimensions? Is there a setting to make that the preferred method for editing sketch dimensions? 2. How can I turn
