Rotate About Scene Floor, AKA “Why does my Rotate cursor look different in SOLIDWORKS?”

EmailFacebookLinkedInTwitterShare

I had unknowingly struggled with this SOLIDWORKS command for several months. I use “unknowingly” here not because I wasn’t aware that I was struggling (I very much was) but because I wasn’t aware that this command was the cause. I write this article in hopes that there are others out there in my former position—knowing the what but not the why. Essentially, it seemed like SOLIDWORKS suddenly stopped letting me perform certain rotations. The model would get “stuck” in its […]

Rename, Replace and Move SOLIDWORKS files with SOLIDWORKS File Utilities

Courtesy of ‘Captain Obvious’: to rename or move a file on a Windows PC, Microsoft provides a great little program called File Explorer (formerly known as Windows explorer) to accomplish these common tasks. Simply right-click on a file and choose ‘Rename’ and then type in the new name or to move, choose ‘Cut’ and then another right-click to ‘Paste’. This is fine for non-SOLIDWORKS files, but remember that SOLIDWORKS files can have references. Drawing files reference Part or Assembly files and […]

Simulation 2014 Interface Improvements

EmailFacebookLinkedInTwitterShare

Last month I wrote about Toolbox fasteners with SOLIDWORKS Simulation and how they can be converted automatically to connectors in simulation studies.  Today I’m going to focus on improvements to the Simulation interface for post processing.  One thing that Simulation users can struggle with is selecting the correct option for modifying the plots generated from an analysis.  Even with as many years as I have used SOLIDWORKS Simulation, I occasionally edit the definition of a plot when I meant to […]

Customize Your Command Manager Icons in SolidWorks

EmailFacebookLinkedInTwitterShare

Sometimes it’s the little things that can make your day. Thanks to a co-worker, I recently discovered that you can customize the look of the icons in your Command Manager ribbons. So I thought I’d document it for the world to enjoy. You may have gone to Tools > Customize to bring up the Customize interface, where you can customize your Toolbars, Commands, Menus, and Keyboard & Mouse Gesture shortcuts. But did you know that while this dialog is open […]
